April 2018 IFMA Newsletter Print

President's Report

Happy April!  April is here and that means a number of different things to different people: the Easter Bunny may be visiting, so there's a good chance of getting some chocolate or at least have it wave to you from atop the roof of the Anthony-Thomas Candy factory as you're driving on I-270 on the west side.  The madness of March is coming to an end, but the NHL and NBA playoffs are just around the corner.  It also means that college football spring practices have started and the annual 'OSU Spring Game' is in the near future, as well.

For me, spring means crocuses and daffodils, the ability to wear shorts will be here again soon and the cycling season has already begun.  In Europe, the one-day classics are in high gear: Tour of Flanders, La Fleche Wallonne and Paris Roubaix, the pinnacle of the classics.  In the 116th edition of this race on April 8th, cyclists will travel is 159 miles, from Compiegne to the Roubaix Velodrome, over 29 cobblestone sections.  The 'Hell of the North' is one of the toughest road races and below is a photograph of some of the unfortunate carnage guaranteed to take place.   

Let's set aside things that are happening across the pond, but focus on some things a little closer to home.  Since my last report, there's been a lot of things happening in Central Ohio:

  • Columbus put on a wonderful spectacle by hosting the Women's NCAA Basketball championship, with Notre Dame coming out on top
  • The Blue Jackets rode a 10 game winning streak and are going to make the NHL playoffs for the second consecutive year
  • The Crew have started off their 23rd season going 3-0-1 and are hopefully gaining traction to stay in Columbus
  • The Clippers are starting their 10th season at Huntington Park and will be hosting both the AAA All Star game in June, as well as the Triple-A Championships in September
  • The Ohio State Men's hockey team has made it to the Frozen Four and will be taking on Minnesota-Duluth
  • Ohio State and US Olympian, Kyle Snyder, won his third NCAA Wrestling national title

 

Now that we've talked about some big picture, non-work related items, let's focus on you and your operation.  Here's a couple things to think about:

  • Property inspection: Now is the time to complete a very thorough, interior and exterior inspection to assess how your facility fared this past winter and to prioritize what repairs and projects needed tobe completed.
  • Roof inspection: In preparation for the spring rains, the roof(s) need to be inspected to generate a preventative maintenance plan so that these repairs can be completed sooner than later.  
  • Paving inspection: As we discussed last month, this winter has been extremely rough on pavement, so it's probably going to require a little more focus this spring/summer.  Thus, spending a some time to inspect your hardscaped areas will allow you to hopefully get back ahead of the deterioration. 
  • Budget: With the amount of snowfall that we received this winter, I'm betting that your facility expenses are a little over budget.  Not to worry, there's still plenty of time in the year to get things corrected, but now is the time to start thinking about what work needs to be completed and what ultimately can be deferred (if needed). 
  • Goals: If you've had a year like mine, there probably hasn't been a good time to review your 2018 goals for the year and the majority of your goals (if not all of your goals) haven't gotten enough (or any) of your attention.  Unfortunately, Q1 is in the books and you need to take a couple minutes to make your goals a priority.  Schedule a meeting with yourself in April to review your goals and to schedule dedicated time to work on these goals in the remaining months of the year.  If you don't make them a priority, those goals will not bet achieved.

 

Since we've covered your facility and making sure your job is on the right track, how about taking a minute to focus on your career?  One way to increase that focus is by becoming more active in IFMA Central Ohio.  Whether it be making a conscientious effort to attend more of our activities (programs, tours and volunteering events), or by joining a committee, there are plenty of options for you to get more involved.  If you're interested in becoming more involved, please feel free to reach out to me directly at mbutterw2009@gmail.com or to the Board at admin@ifmacentralohio.org.

Community Service

In celebration of Earth Day, IFMA Central Ohio will be continuing it's annual tradition of volunteering at the Franklinton Gardens on Friday, April 20th from 9am - 12pm. 

Please plan on joining your fellow IFMA members to help clean-up the gardens, as well as install new plants.  

Please dress accordingly and bring garden gloves.

Remember, each community service event you attend increases your chances of winning a $100 gift card!!!

Secretary's Report

The IFMA Central Ohio Chapter is taking nominations for it's Officer positions. Each position (President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer) will be for a one year term that runs from July 1, 2018 to June 30th, 2019.  All members are eligible to nominate themselves or another Chapter member for one of these positions.  Nominations can be made via email to admin@ifmacentralohio.org and need to be submitted by Friday, May 11th, 2018. In your nomination email, please provide the name of the member you would like to nominate and for which position.

Below is a description of each officer position:

President

The Chapter President shall be a member of the Association in good standing and shall be a member of the Chapter. The President shall serve as Chairman of the Board; shall preside at all board meetings; shall select the Chairs of special committees; shall ensure that the Chapter is represented at the annual House of Delegates Meeting through a delegate selection procedure in conformity with any policies adopted by the IFMA Board of Directors; shall be an ex-officio member of all committees (except the Nominations Committee); and shall sign all agreements and formal instruments.

The President currently has the following responsibilities:

  • Oversees/runs the monthly Board meeting
  • Moderator at programs, tours, events- Program Committee
  • Pay for program, tour, events fees- Programs/Events Committee Chairperson or Treasurer
  • Moderator of the State of the Union Luncheon
  • Part of officer group (President, VP, Secretary and Treasurer) that can approve/deny scholarship requests
  • Monthly President’s report for chapter Newsletter
  • Lead by example by attending as man chapter programs, tours and events as possible
  • Represent the Chapter at Facility Fusion or World WorkPlace
  • Attend at least one (1) committee meeting for each committee every quarter

 

Vice President (“VP”)

The Chapter Vice President shall be a member of the Association in good standing and shall be a member of the Chapter. The VP shall perform such duties as are given to the VP by these bylaws or assigned by the Board of Directors. The VP shall perform all the duties of the President in case of the disability or absence of the President and, when so acting, shall have all the powers of and be subject to all the restrictions upon the President. The VP shall participate and support the Membership committee. 

Treasurer

The Chapter Treasurer shall be a member of the Association in good standing and shall be a member of the Chapter. The Treasurer shall collect and receive Chapter monies and securities; deposit funds and disburse same, subject to the direction of the Board of Directors; keep accurate books of account; submit a report at Board of Directors’ meetings; cosign all agreements and formal instruments, except those pertaining to the office of the Secretary; and submit a report of the Treasurer’s office at an annual meeting of the Chapter. The Treasurer shall perform other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.

Secretary

The Chapter Secretary shall be a member of the Association in good standing and shall be a member of the Chapter. The Secretary shall see that notice is sent at least 7 days in advance of all meetings of the Board of Directors and of the Chapter and shall keep accurate minutes thereof. The Secretary shall maintain a file of all correspondence; keep a roster of committees and task forces; forward requested material and information to the Association; cosign all agreements and formal instruments, except those pertaining to the office of the Treasurer; and submit a report of the Secretary’s office at an annual meeting of the Chapter. The Secretary shall perform other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.

Chapter elections will take place between May 14th -June 14th via an electronic ballot system.  On Friday, June 15th, the election results will be announced and the newly elected officers will be sworn in at the Annual Golf Outing.

Drawing upon decades of experience, our representatives perform existing conditions assessments, specification development assistance & submittal review, on-site project start up & technical application consulting, and material sales & support.

Your main responsibilities:  I do specification development, existing conditions assessments, applicator training, product sales and service.

What do you like best about your job?  I really enjoy the problem-solving aspects. It’s nice to be able to assist an Owner or Design Professional by introducing an innovative approach.

Why did you join IFMA?  I perceive IFMA to be a community of facility maintenance professionals where I can make connections and discover new opportunities to help solve problems.

Hometown?  Pensacola, FL

What would you do if you won the lottery tomorrow?  Probably just pay off all my bank notes and keep doing what I do.

First job?  I went to work for a specialty coating applicator as a teenager during summer and winter breaks at school. I stayed with that company for over fifteen years before taking on my current role as an independent representative of Tnemec Company.

What do you like about Central Ohio?  Coming from a much smaller market, my family and I have really enjoyed having so many community activities and events within a short drive of our new home.

What do you like best about your job?  The ability to be a resource to the amazing design and end user community here in Columbus, and to be a part of the projects that are built in this beautiful city.

Why did you join IFMA?  To continue to learn about the workplace environment, what drives facilities to be their best so that I, in turn, can provide the best solutions.

Hometown?  Heath, Ohio (Go Bulldogs!)

What would you do if you won the lottery tomorrow?   Move to St. John or St. Croix. ;)

First job?  Selling advertising at 15 with my Dad at the Utica Herald, Utica, Ohio.

Favorite Book?  The Falco Series – very funny detective based in Roman times.

Favorite Sports Team(s)?  Detroit Red Wings (mandatory when I married my husband) and the Blue Jackets.

Committee Help Needed

Are you looking for a way to network with your fellow IFMA Central Ohio members and get more involved with the Chapter? 

The Committees in IFMA Central Ohio are what makes the Chapter operate efficiently and effectively.  We have a number of committees that need your help:

Programs- This committee selects, schedules and coordinates the monthly programs and tours for the Chapter. The Committee endeavors to help members increase their knowledge and expertise in facility management related topics. This is accomplished by providing programs and tours that bring to the forefront topics of facility management that pertain to the working environment.

Program Recap

The idea of an unmanned aerial vehicle – or drone -- has been around for quite some time.  Early attempts to use an unsophisticated, unpiloted aircraft are documented as early as the U.S. Civil War. Both Union and Confederate troops launched balloons loaded with explosivesduring the mid-1800s in the hope that the balloons would drop down inside ammunition or supply depots and explode.

     But the balloons were at the mercy of the Mother Nature’s winds and proved largely ineffective.

    Today, drones are well on their way to becoming a staple in modern society.  They are used for surveillance, engineering, documentation, entertainment and fun.  But the technology continues to grow by leaps and bounds.  In fact, just last year, Dubai tested a drone taxi service which flew a test flight for about five minutes in September. 

     On Wednesday, March 7, 2018, more than two dozen Central Ohio IFMA Chapter members gathered for a lunchtime demonstration from Mike Cairns of Aerial Image Solutions and Infinite Impact.  He brought the latest and greatest to test out indoors as snow squalls and flurries mixed outside for a very unsafe, and unpleasant, test environment. 

     Cairns held a similar demonstration for the group about a year and a half ago, and the technological advancement in the industry has been astonishing.

     Cairns indicated that likely the largest part of his business is in data capturing – meaning drone photography, video, 3D media and mapping, 3D scanning, thermal detection, and ground penetrating radar. 

     Drone photography has grown immensely with the use of better cameras. Standard in the industry is 20 pixels so that there is some ability to zoom in for incredible detail, but stronger lenses can give even better pictures when necessary.  Cairns showed examples of photos of an apartment complex where the owner wanted to determine how tenants were taking care of the property and for future planning purposes. 

     The use of drone photography is also important for inspection and documentation.  Cairns and his crew have done some recent work at the John Glenn International Airport in Columbus during a large construction project for both planning and historical purposes.  During envelope inspections, Cairns added that drones are much more cost effective, safe and efficient.

     “Getting close proximity without having to go up in a scissor lift or hang over a ledge while tied in, a drone gives you the flexibility to get a better understanding of all the details of your building in a more efficient way,” said Cairns.

     And because drones are capable of returning to the exact same position, they can also be used for comparative photography or video.

     Drones also have the capability to utilize 3D, 360 degree photography and video.  “It’s interactive and pretty compelling depending on what you are using it for,” said Cairns. 

     Using a digital stitching process, drones can also take hundreds of aerial shots which can be digitally manipulated to form one giant map in either 2D or 3D.  For example, digital mapping can determine how much dirt is left in a stockpile, or can map a rooftop for inspection and repair. 

     Cairns stresses that using a drone is often safer.  Drones can reach many places that are tough for humans to reach, dangerous, or involve hazardous materials.  For example, Cairns and his staff are developing a prototype protection system for one of their drones so that it will be able to enter storage drums for inspection.  The webbed protection that surrounds the drone is flexible and allows the drone to “bump” into things, lightly, without flipping over or crashing.  Cairns demonstrated the contraption inside the Electrical Trades Center of Central Ohio where IFMA Chapter members met in March, demonstrating its dexterity and utility in a small, confined space. 

     In the not too far off future, Cairns predicts that drones will be used for deliveries, physical transfers, rope leads, tool transfers on job sites, and eventually transportation for humans, like the taxi prototypes being tested in Dubai.

     Cairns brought three of his drones to the Central Ohio IFMA demonstration including the Phantom 4 Pro (most common), the Mavic Air (portable and foldable), and the Inspire 2, by far the largest of the group.  He demonstrated the Mavic Air inside its protective web, maneuvering it throughout the conference room as Central Ohio IFMA Chapter members and their guests ate lunch. 

     In just a few years, drones have enhanced and redefined a variety of industries.  Said Cairns, the possibilities of drone development are endless.

Chapter Scholarship Information

The Central Ohio Chapter of IFMA Scholarship program is designed for members to pursue credentials and certifications, degrees in facility management or related fields, as well as to attend World Workplace or Facility Fusion.  

In conjunction with the Rewards Program, the scholarship eligibility period starts December 1st and runs through November 30th.  Members earn points by attending programs, facility tours, events and community service activities.  Extra points are awarded if you attend World Workplace, Facility Fusion, are an active committee member or recruit additional professional members.

IFMA Central Ohio Rewards Program

The 2018 IFMA Central Ohio Rewards program for members is in full swing and it's not too late to get points by attending IFMA programs, tours, events and community service activities during 2018.

Make sure you attend as many IFMA events as possible to earn points for a chance to win $500 that can be used for educational opportunities: (World WorkPlace, Facility Fusion or other events) or pursuing professional designations certifications (Facility Management Professional (FMP), Sustainability Facility Professional (SFP), Certified Facility Manager (CFM), for example).  Members earn points by attending programs, tours and events, so make sure to attend as many IFMA events as you can by November 30th. 

The winners of the 2018 IFMA Central Ohio Rewards program will be announced during the Annual State of the Union Luncheon in December 2018.
