Program Recap

Following a week of rain and thunderstorms, blue skies were plentiful for the 29th Annual Central Ohio IFMA Golf Outing held once again on the greens at the Golf Club of Dublin Friday, June 15, 2018.

A few stray puddles and lush, green fairways were the only remnants of the week’s foul weather as members of Central Ohio’s IFMA Chapter and their guests hit the links in a “Minute-to-Win-It” style competition full of fun and games, laughter and hilarities.

It was a day, as always, to remember.

The Golf Club of Dublin hosted the event for the fifth year in a row.  Dublin, which is also home to Memorial Golf Tournament, has been welcoming Central Ohio IFMA Chapter members for a quarter of a century as they take a day to relax and network amid fades, fats and flop shots.  As each foursome completed their 18 holes, they made their way back to the club house for an afternoon of food, fun and giveaways.

These year’s theme centered around the Minute-to-Win-It gameshow which originally aired on NBC in early 2000.  The show features everyday Americans competing in 60-second challenges with household objects for a shot at a million bucks. Central Ohio IFMA Chapter members and their guests – on the other hand – took the challenges a little less seriously as the stakes were much lower.  But they likely had a bit more fun.

While the course challenged all Chapter golfers, four stood out as champions.  For Steve Warrick, Dave Hazlett, Barry Adams, and Brian Carpenter -- shooting a 56 -- it means bragging rights until next year.  In fact, Warrick, Adams and Carpenter were part of last year’s winning team with a score of 55.

In all, nearly 100 participated in this year’s event.

Other winners included Terry Love for the Men’s Longest Drive (hole #10); Rebecca Karason for the Women’s Longest Drive (hole # 5); Scott Tucker for the Men’s Closest to the Pin (hole #2); Elke Peters for the Women’s Closest to the Pin (hole #14); and Lance Fox, winner of the putting contest – this year putted with the infamous “Billy Baroo” putter (sponsored by Perry’s Window Cleaning).

Registration and warm-ups began at 7:00 a.m. amid the rolling greens and morning dew of the Golf Club of Dublin.  The actual event got underway at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start and hole sponsors waiting to greet golfers at nearly every tee with an assortment of snacks, cold drinks, games, and give-aways.

At the conclusion of the event, golfers enjoyed a buffet lunch sponsored by the Central Ohio IFMA Chapter.  Members and guests also held tight to raffle tickets with the hopes of winning a number of different prizes including gift cards, golf balls, golf hats, a driver, golf towels, Dueling Axes passes and more.

Dollars raised through the event will be used for the Chapter’s Scholarship Fund.

The favored stop this year?  Thompson’s Building Associates with their on-site slider cart.  Serving sliders hot off the grill, with all the fixings, gave golfers something to talk about all day – and a little extra energy to get them to the 19th hole.  Another fan favorite?  Toilet Paper Hut Hut Hike at the Kendall-sponsored tent.

Former Chapter President Kevin George took a moment at the conclusion of the luncheon to swear in newly elected officers Todd Kise (president), Brian Leach (vice-president), Diane Van Dyne (treasurer), and Lisa Schultz (secretary).

This year, the Community Service Committee collected new and gently used business clothing for Neighborhood Services.  Neighborhood Services aims to temper the ill effects of poverty by providing food and material assistance to persons in need in the Columbus community.

Hole sponsors for this year included Cotterman and Company, Inc., Environmental Management, Inc., Aetna Integrated Services, Commercial Works, Thompson Building Associates/ResQ24, BrightView Landscape Services, Kimball, Scioto Services, Davey Tree Commercial Grounds Management, Burns and Scalo, Simon Roofing, Ohio Custodial Management, and SHYFT Collective.

Additional sponsors included Perry's Window Cleaning (Putting Contest), EMI (Men's Closest to the Pin), Scioto Services (Men's Longest Drive), Loeb Electric (Women's Longest Drive), Legacy Maintenance Services (Highest Score), and IFMA Central Ohio (Women's Closest to the Pin, First and Second Place sponsors, lunch and grill).

A special thanks to this year's golf committee -- Charlie Snyder as chairperson, along with events committee members Kristin Peloso, Jess Hellmich, George Metzka and Kim Hart.

This is the fifth year that the event was held at the Golf Club of Dublin, the centerpiece of the Ballantrae neighborhood -- a 640-acre residential community.  Mother Nature cooperated with blue skies, warm temperatures, and no rain.

Course designers Dr. Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry believe “the best golf is played in the most natural surroundings, and on golf courses that strive to be sustainable in the environment of which they are a part.”
