President's Report

Eric Winston, a member of the Central Ohio IFMA Chapter and the inaugural 2019 Central Ohio FMP Graduating Class, passed away July 21, 2020, after a brief illness.

Eric worked 11 years with AEP never missing a day, and for the Ohio Housing Finance Agency for seven years, also never missing one day. He was a loyal employee who loved his job and the people he worked with.

Eric became a member of the Central Ohio IFMA Chapter in 2018 and spent four months working on his Facility Management Professional (FMP) designation with 13 of his fellow facility managers, graduating on June 28, 2019.

“Eric was a great member of the Central Ohio IFMA family and will be sorely missed,” said Todd Kise, Immediate Past President, Central Ohio IFMA Chapter.  “His hard work and dedication were exemplified in his commitment to earn his FMP designation as a part of our first class of 13 to reach that milestone together last June.  Eric always had a smile on his face and knew how to move around a room of facility managers with ease.  We will miss his vibrant personality and his contributions to our organization and family.”

John Lloyd, Director of Facilities at the Ohio Housing Finance Agency, who is also a Central Ohio IFMA Chapter member, remembers Eric fondly.

“Eric was the kind of person who lit up a room,” said Lloyd.  “He always had a smile, a joke and a kind word for everyone.  He made everyone feel a little better about their day. And, he was absolutely reliable, working for us for almost eight years and never missing a day.  He was often the first to dig in on a project and always made sure our shop shined in the eyes of our customers.

“I was really proud when he went through the FMP class last year with IFMA Central Ohio,” remembered Lloyd.  “He was definitely excited to be learning more about FM.”

Eric was born at Riverside Hospital on Sept. 30, 1970.  He attended Bidwell Porter Elementary for two years in Gallia County, Ohio, before moving to California with his mother. There he attended Coliseum Street Elementary School. His friend and classmate was Malcom Jamal Warner, or "Theo” on the Cosby Show. Eric and his family later returned to Columbus where he graduated from Mifflin High School.

According to his family, Eric loved his family and big family gatherings. He was the life of every party with a big smile on his face with a joke and kind word for everyone.

He was a very private and calm person. He liked soft music, slow jazz and his girlfriend Nicole. He livened the atmosphere whenever he entered the room.

Eric is survived by his mother Carolyn, brother Vernell, nephew Donovan Eric, aunt Freda Lawson, uncle Larry and Sue Ann Winston, uncle Paul Winston, uncle Stacey and Gigi Winston, a very special cousin Victoria Logan Amari, her two sons Curtis and Yusef whom he loved and nurtured like sons, his life-long friend Virgil, many other friends, cousins and co-workers.

Thank you,

Brian Leach, FMP

President, IFMA Central Ohio
